I love hoodies and I wanted a handknit one that I could wear pretty much anywhere doing pretty much anything. I wanted it to be fashionable and effortlessly cool but also practical, warm, and cozy. I was also so motivated to find a way to create a big and relatively structured hood with knitting. This pattern is everything I hoped for and I am so excited to share it with you!

Directions

This versatile hoodie is worked from the top down beginning with the back shoulder and neck shaping. The remainder of the back yoke is worked until the underarms where there is some slight underarm shaping. The back stitches are placed on hold while the front is worked. The stitches are picked up at either shoulder where the shoulder and neck shaping are worked at the same time until stitches are cast on at the base of the neck and the shoulders are joined to continue working flat until the underarm shaping. From there the front and back are joined together and the body is worked in the round until the trim. Simple yet deep knit one purl one ribbing is used as the hem to finish the body.

Sleeves are then picked up and worked with the same deep ribbing for the cuffs.

Lastly, the hood. It is a little slow growing but it will be worth it! The hood is created by picking up stitches around the neck opening and working flat in double knitting. Once the hood is complete, the inside and outside layers of the double knit fabric are grafted together using Kitchener Stitch.

NEEDLES: US 10 / 6.0 mm circular needle 80 cm / 32” or 100 cm / 40” long, and 40 cm / 16” long circular needle and set of 4 or 5 double pointed needles are optional for the sleeves.

NOTIONS: Stitch markers, tapestry needle, and a spare circular needle with a slightly smaller needle size.
