I haven’t knit a single stitch in over two weeks. This isn’t by choice, I’m injured. I’m not exactly sure how or why it happened but I have been struggling with a nerve injury for the past couple of weeks. It’s been manageable but super painful. Maybe its because of the amount of knitting I do, maybe it’s something else, but it definitely has made me think about how I’m currently spending my time.
I have always found I struggle to actually chill. I’m always looking for ways to be productive even when I’m supposed to be relaxing. It’s just my natural tendency. But during this knitting intermission I’ve found I actually quite enjoy a break now and then to focus on other things. A few hours at the end of the day is a lot of time, do I need to spend all of it knitting? Probably not every night. I’m assuming this may resonate with at least some of you.
I think with such limited “free” time these days I feel like I want to make the most of it, but that definitely means I cram everything in to short stints of time. Am I relaxed during this down time? Probably not. Is that stress/anxiety a likely contributor to my current nerve situation? Probably.
Anyway, you see my point.
Doing less every night would probably net me further ahead in the grand scheme of things. Maybe this is obvious to most of you. After all this is a marathon not a sprint. So if that’s really what I care about, it’s probably time to reevaluate a few things. A good thing to think about over my December WIPs.
I’ve been seeing so many cabled sweaters pop up on knitting social media this fall and winter season and I’ve been drawn to almost all of them for some reason or another. They feel like the ultimate classic heirloom my hand knit wardrobe is missing. I’ve been scheming on what yarn I could use for something like this and I have a plan. Earlier this year I released a Hoodie pattern knit in De Rerum Natura Cyrano.
My first sample is what I used for the pattern photos but I knit a second in a dark grey colour that I end up reaching for more than the original. One thing I love about knits is that you can always unravel them… which is exactly what I’m going to do. It’s an aran weight yarn so the cabled sweater is going to have to be on the chunkier side but I think that is perfect for me.
Here are some of my favourite cable knit patterns I’ve seen over the past few months. Not all will work with my intended yarn but I’ll be able to make something work. I have plans to frankenstein a few of the sweaters below into something that is exactly what I want.

Dagmar Jacket/Dagmar Sweater by PetiteKnit
Boreas Sweater by Aegyoknit
The Sirena Sweater pattern by Cookie the Knitter
I’ll be sharing updates on my unravelling journey here as I make progress. I’m looking forward to this one.
Have a great week,
Andrea
